Sometimes you gotta start over.
When I first had the vision for Détroit is the New Black, I felt called to the mission of holding space for a city and a people that had been overlooked, marginalised and steeped in trauma, yet rooted in innovation, ingenuity and immense pride. I was inspired by the energy of the city. Mobilised to be a part of something larger than myself.
I, too, could relate to the trauma, the residual feelings of despair and the weight of being consistently underestimated. But like so many others here, I knew that this was also an invitation to un-become what no longer resonated with your purpose. That at your lowest, you can, and must, choose to embrace hope and build with those that are committed to never stop growing.
I began this brand journey 10 years ago, and since its inception I’ve changed. A lot has changed. I’ve navigated heartbreak, loss, failure and grief. I’ve felt the indescribable joy of becoming a mother, and the deep relief that comes with embarking on a process of healing and personal growth. Life, as they say, has life’d. As I reflect on this journey it's been challenging to understand how my new self, and the brand, fits in this new season. But that’s the thing about life, brands, cities, people…they evolve. And they are imperfect and beautiful at every stage of their evolution.
Given the current state of our local and global communities, I feel called to contribute light and beauty where I can. Controlling only what I’m able and believing that the rest is in divine order. I believe authenticity is truth and truth will always find its way to light.
Détroit is the New Black has always been about perspective. About being who you are, where you are. About choosing your own narrative. And determining your future. I feel grateful to be given a fresh perspective in this season and look forward to continuing to express my highest truth through this platform. As always, your thoughts, feedback and authentic offering are welcome. I pray that our mission grows and offers others opportunities to grow with us.
Thank you for holding space for me, as I hope to continue doing for you.
Always forward with gratitude,
Roslyn
